Eddie O’Connor 1956-2024

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Eddie O’Connor. Sincere condolences to his family.

Eddie O'Connor, 2024

His association with Dublin C.C. lasted over thirty years, and he also served as club President, most recently ending at the end of last year.

He was on the Dublin team that won the Branagan Cup in 2022, and probably in 2000 (for which records are scarce). He was also on the Dublin team that won the Armstrong Cup last season, for the first time since 1980-81, and the photo above shows him with the trophy.

Dublin was not his first club, though; he played for Rathmines in the Armstrong starting in 1980-81, and was on the team that won the Cup in 1988-89, scoring 5½/9 on board 3; he had moved to Dublin C.C. by 1993.

He played in three Irish championships, 1983, 1989, and 1993, achieving his best result of 5½/9 and joint 7th place in the first of these.

Eddie O’CONNOR, b. 16 August 1956, d. Dublin, 13 September 2024.

Very shocked to hear about Eddie’s passing. My condolences to Theresa and family. I first met Eddie in 1981 over the board. Eddie was a Cork man and played for Cork teams before he went to work and live in Dublin. He worked all his life for the ESB. He was a good friend to me back in the 80’s. He gave me a couple of weeks work in ’86, house sitting while he and Theresa went on holiday and painting their garden wall, windows and shed (although I did accidently paint their wooden framed windows shut). In ’88 he immediately put me up in their house when he found out I was staying in a hostel during the Irish ch. that year and in 1990 he lent me a suit to attend interviews in London. (which I had forgotten about until we met up again in 2022 in Dresden and he remembered being delighted when I told him I got the interviews).
We had a great catch up in ’22 in Dresden and meeting up with Eddie was the highlight of my trip there. He was in great form and high spirits and I thought I would have had the chance to see Eddie on many more Irish senior teams.
    He will be badly missed.
    RIP Eddie.
