GM Gergely Szabo gave a simultaneous against 19 players : 16 wins, 2 draws and one loss (vs.James Danaher) in St.Michaels Chess Club (9 Lower Cecil Street,Limerick City) on Thursday November 1st.
The draws were agreed with Mr. Austin Reed (St.Michaels Sporting Club chairman) and Jeffrey Alfred (Adare Chess Club). So the only one who won was James Danaher from Shannon Club.
The lecture title was : “Cutting your opponent counter-play”.
GM Gergely Szabo is the captain and coach of the Romanian women team (5th in the World Olympiad 2012, Istambul).
In the previous month, on Thursday October 11th , in St.Michaels Chess Club another Romanian Grand Master gave a simultaneous to 18 players and the GM won all the games.
Sean
I have just come across your web site. Hans Ree gave a simo in Skerries Rugby Club in the late 80’s Borris Spasskii gave two simo one in Trinity Coll and the other in Kilkenny. Dany King also gave an earlier simo in Phibsboro old club rooms in Frederick Streetlate 80’s or possibily early 90’s
Regarding your August blog; the game was completed with both players in severe time trouble (illegible scoresheets?) and the move 52. Rg6 and not 52 Rg8 should be inserted to make sense of what actually happened!
Boris Spassky was invited to Ireland by Kilkenny Chess Club to celebrate the clubs 21st birthday.
He gave three simuls, one in Kilkenny organised by ourselves on 23/03/1991 and two in Dublin organised by Eamon Keogh. Not having thirty players in the club to play against him Kilkenny invited back all former players to participate.
The result as I remember was +22 =8
Draws were attained by Liam Brady, Sean Bradley,Ciaran Sharkey,Paud O Reilly,Maurice Buckley and Trevor Hunter et al.
Hi Sean,
Just read the biographical note on the late Gerard Kerlin.
His family donated the Gerard Kerlin Memorial trophy for the winner of the All Ireland Schoolboys |Championship, (now under 19 championship).
My brother Michael won this trophy in 1956 and I was lucky enough to keep it in the family by winning it in 1957.

Re 1932 Correspondence Chess Championship and Tailteann Games 1932
I have in my possession a 1932 medal for ICCC engraved W[arwick] Nash but note that W.J. Allen is attributed in list compiled by Tom Conlon. Is it possible to contact Tom?
Secondly, I also have a 1932 Tailteann Games major tourney medal also engraved Warwick Nash but published records attribute it to J.(J.) O’Hanon – can anybody comment on this?
