Notes
Key In "Pairings & results",
  • "qual" denotes method of qualification
  • "(age)" denotes the player's age on his birthday that year, regardless of whether that birthday fell before, during, or after the event
  • "x-ch" denotes former Irish champions
  • "ol" denotes members of the previous Olympiad team (Buenos Aires 1939)
  • "ch#" denotes the number of championships the player played in, up to and including this one
Débuts and final appearances Diskin, Hickey, Kearney, Killeen, O'Donnell, and O'Sullivan made their débuts. Casey, Davies, and Minnis never played again.
Qualification “Every province may nominate 3 players, and the present Champion will throw his Crown into the ring ...”, “Roddy the Rover” (Irish Press, 3 June 1947 p. 4). The author suggested making Dublin a separate fifth province, and he reported that Austin Bourke had suggested modifying the qualification rules to allow entries by Irish players from overseas.

Three players per province plus the defending champion would have left an odd number of players and thus a bye. Leinster seem to have been allocated one extra nomination, perhaps to deal with this problem. In addition, Leinster nominated John Casey (of Dublin) as a replacement for the defending champion Barney O'Sullivan, who played instead at the Hilversum Zonal tournanent.

Disambiguation John Casey, b. ca. 1895, is given as "John Casey (1)" to distinguish him from John Casey, b. 1930 or 1931, who played in the Irish championships of 1949, 1950, 1951, and 1952.
Venue “Built in 1880, and having replaced an 18th century financial exchange on the site which in even early centuries was occupied by a castle, its address is 10, 11, 12 & 13 Castle Street, rounding a corner at South Main Street to the winsomly named Paradise Place.” —Historic Cork Catholic Young Mens’ Society Hall up for sale, Irish Examiner, September 14, 2017 (includes photo).
