Tournament review

“Top seed David Dunne celebrated his recent FIDE master title award by duly emerging a clear winner of the 1983 IBM Irish senior championship which concluded in Castlebar last Sunday. It was the 24-year-old Dubliner's first outright national title win, having previously shared first place in 1979, ’81, and ’82.

Dunne, who collected £400 and the perpetual trophy, led throughout and finished unbeaten on seven points from nine games, half-a-point ahead of fellow international Colm Barry of Dublin. Four players, John Delaney, Eugene Curtin, Eddie O'Reilly (all Dublin) and Paul Wallace (Wexford) were next best on the 6-point mark, with Delaney collecting the third place trophy on tie break.

Cork international Philip Short, who shared first place with Dunne in 1981 and ’82, matched his rival for four rounds, but went under to the champion in the fifth round and faded out of contention in the closing stages.”
