Discrepancies/errata
  • The score given for Daly - Fitzsimons, round 2, in Colm Daly's annotation of the game on the LCU blog differs from the version shown here, which comes from the tournament web site. The LCU blog version finished 40. Qe7+ Kg6 41. d6 h4 42. Qe8+ Kg7 43. gxh4 Qg4+ 44. Kf1 Qh3+ 45. Kg1 Qg4+ 1/2-1/2.
  • The score given on the tournament web site for Daly – Courtney (round 4) differed from the version shown here, which comes from the winner, via the LCU Blog: Tipster Comp ...........Continued (via the Wayback Machine).
  • For Fitzsimons – Brady (round 4), the tournament web site gave the ambiguous 17. Rb1. This should be 17. Rab1.
  • The FIDE tournament report gives an incorrect number of players (possibly left unchanged from the previous year's report?) and time control. The time control shown is the one also shown on the entry form, but this was changed at popular request just before the tournament.
  • Alexander Baburin, in his Sunday Independent report, said that “Firstov had a better tiebreak score, so the young player from Estonia, who's been resident in Ireland for the past few years, took the title of the 2012 Irish Chess Champion”. Jim Olney said that Firstov had finished first on tie-break, but since he was not eligible for the title, it was shared between Brady and Daly. Baburin's account is clearly incorrect. Olney's account, though it comes to the correct conclusion, also seems inaccurate: it seems more natural to exclude Firstov as ineligible before applying any tie-break, and since exactly two players would remain, no tie-break would apply.
Tie-break Since 1975, the ICU practice and/or policy was that two eligible tied players would share the title, but (since at least 1982) for three or more a tie-break would apply. In 1982 and 1996, three-way ties were resolved by tie-break to produce a single champion. For 1982, the tie-break method was progressive / cumulative.

For the 2012 championship, there was no description before the event of how ties between three or more eligible players would be handled. The potential close finish caused considerable discussion on the LCU blog during the event. (Going into the last round, there were two different possible six-way ties for first, each with five players eligible for the title of Irish champion.) John Delaney provided the 1982 rule ("Two way and its shared. 3 way tie results in use of cumulative score as first tie break, as in 1982 from memory. Still in force I believe.": see comment in Tipster Cometition,,,,,,,,Continued Again thread, July 13, 2012); Peter Cafolla announced that a meeting of some but not all players before the final round had agreed that all eligible players would share the title ("There was a meeting today before the round started and although any late comers missed it it was decided that in the event of a multiple tie ALL the winners shall share the title........this is the fairest particularly with a small field.": see comment in Tipster Comp.........Part 4 thread, July 14, 2012); and finally Colm Daly (then ICU PRO) announced that the tie-break for three or more would be Median Buchholz ("Must be a secret meeting because I was told very clearly [after the round had started] that if three people are n the same points [except for Yuri who can only ever win joint share of the prize]then there will be a tie break but no play off and it will be bucholz that decides who gets the title. While if it is two people then they share the title.": comment, July 14, 2012, same thread; "BTW Apologies to all when I mentioned Bucholz system I had meant to say Bucholz Median but because I forgot that they are not the one and the same I caused some confusion by appearing to suggest two different tie break systems. Of course there is only one to be used and that is bucholz MEDIAN.", comment, same thread, July 15, 2012). (All links via the Wayback Machine.)
Tipster competition The tipster competition was won by Martin Crichton.
