Tournament review

“IM Sam Collins outpaced one of the strongest Irish Championship fields in recent years to claim his second national title at Trinity College, Dublin. Despite his excellent 8/9 score, the 32-year-old top seed had only a half-point to spare over runner-up FM Stephen Jessel, who, along with the new champion, was undefeated. FM David Fitzsimons was third on 6.5/9. ...

Collins, who won his first title 12 years ago, was the only player with maximum points after four rounds. He conceded draws to Jessel in round 5 and [Paul] Wallace in round 7 and with a round to go stood level with Jessel on 7/8. Jessel was held to a draw by [Philip] Short in the final round which enabled Collins, who beat [Jonathan] O'Connor, to capture the title....”

Interesting games

A topsy-turvy game from the defending champion:
         Daly, Colm – Butler, Kevin C.      1-0

Should have been a major upset, but White agreed a draw in a winning position:
Palmer, Bernard – Jessel, Stephen      ½-½

A highly theoretical line in which White strays from the beaten path (21. Rxc3) and is punished:
         O'Donnell, Conor – Redmond, John P.      0-1

Sometimes the Dragon is made look a forced loss:
         Fitzsimons, David – O'Connell, Gerard      1-0

A hard-fought game but White finally winkles out a win:
Daly, Colm – Wallace, Paul      1-0

At move 20 it seems unlikely White will break through on the e- and f-files, but with an elaborate regrouping he does:
Collins, Sam – Fitzsimons, David      1-0

Even with queens exchanged, White whips up an unstoppable attack on the king:
         Jessel, Stephen – Redmond, John P.      1-0

Black spurns a draw but ends up in a fatal bind:
         O'Donnell, Conor – Ó Cinnéide, Mel      1-0

All's well for White at move 19, but he proceeds to give up three (!) minor pieces:
         Bourached, Anthony – O'Rourke, Ray      0-1

An enterprising sacrifice is rewarded (but was it sound?):
King, Melvyn – Twomey, Pat      0-1

"A feast": inventive attack and resourceful defence:
Jessel, Stephen – Collins, Sam      ½-½

A fighting draw with chances for both sides:
         Redmond, John P. – Wallace, Paul      ½-½

Sustained pressure builds into a winning attack:
Collins, Sam – Daly, Colm      1-0

An innovation by Black in a highly theoretical line leads to a winning attack, but somehow White wriggles free:
Murray, David – Brady, Stephen      ½-½

A chaotic opening leaves White with a won game:
         Short, Philip – O'Donnell, Conor      1-0

Needing a win, White tries a risky line but Black develops an irresistable attack:
Daly, Colm – Jessel, Stephen      0-1

The deciding game: in a complicated position with chances for both sides, White's flag falls:
         O'Connor, Jonathan – Collins, Sam      0-1
