Olympiad place |
The winner was guaranteed an automatic Olympiad place for the next Olympiad after the 2021 Olympiad. |
Débuts |
Aherne, Burke, Murchadha, and Sam Murray made their Irish championship débuts. |
Eligibility |
Under rules approved at the 2018 AGM, some players could have the rating requirement ignored provided they were nominated by: a. The ICU Executive (maximum 2 players); or b. The tournament organisers (maximum 1 player). In addition, the Irish Women’s Champion, Irish 50+ and 65+ Champions, and all previous IRL winners of this event were automatically eligible to play in the Irish Championship irrespective of rating.
For this event, the rating requirement was applied strictly. Sam Murray played as a filler to ensure no player had an unwanted bye. |
Tiebreak |
The tiebreak method (see Terms and Conditions) was adopted for the 2018 championship, based on ICU Executive Committee decision, and subsequently ratified at the 2018 AGM for all Irish championships. |
Possible tiebreaks |
Heading into the last round, four players had a chance of finishing first or equal first, but only three had a chance of becoming champion. Conor Murphy could only have finished equal first by winning his last round game (as he did), and by Seán Murphy winning against Heidenfeld, instead of losing. That would have produced a three-way tie for first between Heidenfled, C. Murphy, and S. Murphy, which would have led to a playoff match between Heidenfeld and S. Murphy.
Seán Murphy was guaranteed at least a playoff if he had won his last-round game; he would have won immediately if O'Gorman won or drew. |
Withdrawals |
Several players entered and withdrew before the event started, including at least Sam Collins, Mark Quinn, Joe Ryan, Stephen Brady, Killian Delaney, John Delaney, Shane Melaugh, Daire McMahon, Jacob Flynn, Colin Menzies, John McMorrow, Jonathon Peoples, Diana Mirza, Eamon Keogh, Colm Quigley, and Conor Nolan (16 players). |
