53. Qd3+! is the only way to win: 53... Qxd3 54. Bxd3+ Kh5 55. Bxa6 f2 56. Kg2 f1=Q+ 57. Bxf1 Rc8 58. a6 Rxc7 59. b4 and the pawns can't be stopped.

The live boards initially showed 53. c8=Q before changing almost immediately to the rook promotion. White had used an upside-down rook to signal the queen promotion, and was forced to promote to a rook (John McMorrow, Boards.ie, August 11, 2023). Ironically, this helped White (as pointed out by Tim Harding), since now Black could draw via 53... Rxc8 54. Qxc8 f2+ 55. Kh2 Qe5+ and he would presumably have captured if the pawn had promoted to a queen.

53... f2+ 54. Kh2 Rf3?

54... Rxc8! still draws.

55. Rg8+ Kh5 56. Qg7 Qf5 57. Qe7 Qf4+
