Tournament review

“Belfast-born mathematician Alan Ludgate won his third Irish senior chess championship in University College Galway on Sunday, when he carried off the 1978 title.

This year's success was a particularly sweet triumph for Ludgate. It was his first outright win of the championship, having already shared the title, in 1975 (with Eamon Keogh), and in Cork last year (with Ray Devenney).

He was the only player among the 23 contenders to go through the nine-day event unbeaten. Ludgate, who now resides in Liverpool, scored seven points to win by just half a point from the young Dubliner Eugene Curtin (Dundrum), who made 6½ points.

Consistent throughout and always in contention, the Northerner outpaced his rivals over the second half of the championship when he scored three wins and a draw in the final four rounds. ...”

—Cyril Hardiman, Irish Independent, July 20, 1978 p. 11.
