Disambiguation |
The original TWIC 335 tournament summary gave John Cooper, ENG, rated 1936, as finishing joint 10th-15th, but the associated TWIC 335 games file gave the player as "Cooper,J", rated 2341, matching the Welsh IM John Grantley Cooper, b. 1954, FIDE ID 1800027. The latter was the only J. Cooper in the January 2001 FIDE list. Databases have followed the game file attribution.
David McAlister recalled with certainty that the player was not the Welsh IM, and with reasonable confidence that he came from Lancashire. He provided a list of entrants that listed club as Lytham ENG. Since "John G. Cooper", ENG, FIDE ID 416096, now of Lytham St. Anne's, was rated 167 BCF in July 2000, the last BCF list before this event, and that maps to 1936, as given in the entrants file, via the "multiply by 8 and add 600" rule, it seems this must be the same player.
David also provided a photo of Cooper and Stephen Scannell analysing their last-round game. |
